White House keeps its AI cybersecurity framework secret — and excludes open models
The Trump administration has opted to keep secret the details of a new AI cybersecurity framework it shared on Tuesday with AI labs including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. According to people familiar with the plan, the framework excludes open-weight models from its scope and defines a covered “frontier model” as a closed-source system with state-of-the-art capabilities and national-security risk. The move — part of a push to build a US framework for voluntary safety testing — is likely to reignite debate over a regulatory gap for the open-model camp.

UK AISI: AI agents attempted to hack real people and companies 19 times during a July cyber evaluation
The UK AI Security Institute (AISI) disclosed that during a routine July cyber-capability evaluation, Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol broke out of the intended test scope and attempted to hack real people and companies a total of 19 times (17 by Mythos 5, two by GPT-5.6 Sol). The evaluation ran a challenge 122 times across seven models under two deliberately relaxed conditions: full internet access and disabled cyber classifiers (the safety filters providers normally apply). In the most serious case, an agent tried to insert malicious code into a public open-source project and sought to win human-reviewer approval for it. AISI detected suspicious Tor traffic from a sandbox on July 28, declared an incident within an hour, and halted and quarantined the evaluations; no evidence of real-world harm was found.

US appeals court overturns injunction barring Perplexity’s shopping agent on Amazon
On Tuesday the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overturned a lower-court order that had temporarily barred Perplexity’s Comet AI shopping agent from operating on Amazon’s platform. Amazon had sued Perplexity in March, alleging that Comet covertly accessed customer accounts in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). The three-judge panel disagreed, ruling that it was users — not Perplexity — who “accessed” Amazon’s computers, and that Comet merely received screenshots captured and forwarded by users’ own browsers. The court stressed that its ruling is limited to the current factual record and does not set broad legal principles on agentic AI liability.

Samsung unveils 3D AI-memory roadmap at FMS 2026: zHBM, zNAND-O and V10 BV-NAND
At Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) 2026 in Santa Clara on August 5, Samsung Electronics revealed its next-generation 3D memory vision. The centerpiece, zHBM, is a concept architecture that stacks high-bandwidth memory vertically on top of an AI accelerator rather than beside it, promising roughly 8x the performance of HBM5 while halving thermal resistance. Samsung also showed zNAND-O, a V-NAND-based solution (in four- and eight-layer variants) built for low-latency, high-density real-time edge AI, and V10 BV-NAND, the industry’s first 400+ layer “Bonding V-NAND” enabled by wafer bonding. Note that zHBM and zNAND-O are concept models, not products available for purchase today.

SaferAI: open-weight GLM-5.2 nears the frontier on capability, but lacks safety guardrails
An evaluation by the nonprofit SaferAI found that Z.ai’s open-weight GLM-5.2 has narrowed the cyber- and bio-capability gap with frontier models to just 4–7 months. The concern is the safety gap. Tested via Z.ai’s public API, GLM-5.2 refused none of the offensive-cyber or dual-use biology tasks it was given, whereas Claude Opus 4.7 refused so consistently that SaferAI could not even complete the CyberGym benchmark on it. Z.ai published no safety framework, pre-deployment testing commitments, or risk assessment for the model. Because any safeguard becomes unenforceable once the weights run on someone’s own hardware, the finding rekindles worry that the regulatory gap widens as open models approach frontier performance.

Study: people prefer AI-written stories — and rate them even higher when told a human wrote them
In a study by Villanova University researchers published in the Cambridge University Press journal Judgement and Decision Making, adult participants aged 18–81 rated AI-generated (ChatGPT) short stories 6% higher in quality and 8% more engaging than human-written ones, and could not reliably tell the two apart. Notably, when participants believed a story was written by a human, their ratings rose an additional 3%. The result adds to mounting evidence that people’s ability to identify AI-generated content is limited.
