OpenBot from CopilotKit is an open-source platform for AI coworkers (Bots) that run on your own infrastructure, giving each Bot its own computer: a Chromium browser with its own logins, its own files, and only the tools you grant. It is built from a React/Vite web UI, a Hono server gateway, agent-computer and supervisor services that spin up a browser and workspace per Bot, and PostgreSQL with pgvector for policy, audit logs and credentials; every browser and file tool call must pass through the gateway, which evaluates policy, writes an audit row, and only then executes. Its key differentiator is that any agent speaking the AG-UI protocol can become a Bot, whether built with LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Google ADK or by hand. Key features:

  • An isolated computer per Bot, with an optional gVisor runtime
  • Fail-closed CEL policy rules, with deny rules evaluated before allow rules
  • A Take the wheel handoff that lets a human step in for logins or 2FA
  • Secrets kept out of transcripts and credentials encrypted at rest
  • Governed MCP tool access through a curated catalogue
  • UI components rendered instead of prose, plus Skills that add instructions without adding capabilities
  • An audit trail at /admin/audit showing permitted, refused and failed actions

Typical uses include everyday assistance such as browsing and form-filling, answering company questions from internal knowledge sources, risk and compliance analysis, and custom coworkers with standing roles. Its daily gain nearly tripled from +240 to +707, the largest among non-excluded repos, likely because it offers a self-hosted alternative with policy and audit built in just as the security of browser-wielding agents is in the spotlight. The project is in alpha and requires a CopilotKit Intelligence project and license plus a model API key (OpenAI by default).

Practical takeaway: A solid starting point for browser-automation agent pilots in regulated industries such as finance and insurance, where you must prove what an agent was allowed to do and what was blocked.
